With the release of their third album, Real Estate continued its trend of making each album better than the last. While they stick to their classic sound in Atlas – clean guitar interplay, soft vocals, and eloquently simplistic melody – Real Estate captures a more polished sound than ever before. It is fuller and more mature. In this album, Real Estate is “effortlessly and completely themselves,” as Jayson Greene of Pitchfork describes it. The sound in Atlas reminds you of summertime bliss, but with the pain of nostalgia from the melancholy lyrics. Real Estate will never be more than themselves, but maybe that’s a good thing. They remind us that the best jams are often the simplest ones.
Best song: “Talking Backwards” – This jam is a testament to Real Estate’s guitar-focused sound and the wonderful production on Atlas. The sound is so pure and clear, compounded by Martin Courtney’s soothing vocals.
